“YourGov” An Easier Way to Reach the City of San Mateo

Download the app to submit and report service requests for common maintenance issues to San Mateo’s Public Works Department


San Mateo, CA (July 6, 2017)… The City of San Mateo announces the launch of “YourGov,” an app powered by Cartegraph that provides an easier way for the community to submit and report common maintenance requests to San Mateo’s Public Works Department.

The app makes it easier for anyone with a smartphone, iPhone, or tablet to submit a service request to the City. As long as you are located within San Mateo city boundaries, you can submit a request, take a photo, and send it on for completion.

During this initial phase of the launch, a user can submit a request to notify Public Works of a sidewalk trip or fall hazard, a pothole, a damaged sign, or alert the City to a streetlight that is out. The requests will go directly to the maintenance staff responsible for scheduling and completing the work. The app also works in conjunction with Cartegraph’s operations management system helping to track assets and resources, streamline data entry, and manage requests.

“The idea to launch an app has been in the works for a while,” says David Hulten, Public Works Project Manager. “Public Works, the Parks Division, and others in the City have been wanting to streamline the reporting process and bring more technology to the way we process service requests. With the use of Cartegraph’s app and operations management system, we now have the ability to manage operations more efficiently.”

The use of the “YourGov” app and Cartegraph brings a more systematic approach to managing daily operations and resources. Earlier this year, the City began using Cartegraph’s operations management system — a database of City assets including (streetlights, roads, and sewer pipes) and resources (staff time, vehicles, and equipment). Public Works now has the ability to track how much is being spent on routine and unexpected work, and can more easily schedule the work needed to maintain City infrastructure and facilities.

“The move to Cartegraph for the Parks Division has already seen workflow improvement in several areas,” says Mike Blondino, Parks and Landscape Manager. “In an early instance, we saw how effective Cartegraph could be when we were reporting our time and cost to the City Attorney’s office after a traffic accident damaged irrigation on a median along Saratoga Drive. We look forward to utilizing Cartegraph as one of the tools in serving the citizens of San Mateo.”

Additionally, Public Works maintenance staff and Parks field workers are using iPads in the field to communicate with Cartegraph’s backend reporting system. This allows for faster data entry and improves communication with others involved.

This isn’t the first app the city has launched. In 2013, the “MySanMateo” app was launched to report and remove graffiti from public property. This has worked well for the City generating cost savings in the graffiti removal program and also making it easier for community members to help in the reporting of new cases.
Cartegraph operates the “YourGOV” app, and it is universally used by all of their clients. If you are in another city that contracts with Cartegraph you can report a service request using “YourGOV.” The app uses GIS to identify your location when you open it on your phone.

Public Works continues to receive service requests by email, phone, and the City’s website, but now the administrative team that receives the requests can enter them directly into Cartegraph. The work is assigned and it is easier to track through the operation management system.

“It’s exciting to have the “YourGov” app and Cartegraph’s operation management system in place,” says Brad Underwood, Public Works Director. “We encourage the San Mateo community to download and begin using the app. We’re looking forward to the efficiencies we can gain by reporting and tracking maintenance issues as well as our operations and infrastructure with the use of improved technology.”
